Recommended Films
I watch a lot of movies. Below are some I've seen recently that I recommend.
Noi box cover Noi
An Icelandic coming of age story, it's very well done with beautiful scenery, and wonderful scenes like the bank robbery, the blood, and the piano.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind box cover Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
By the people who brought you "Being John Malkovich," this love story has Jim Carry acting straight and Kate Winslet being silly. It may take a few viewings to figure it all out. I saw it twice in the movie theater as the movie moves backwards through their relationship and forwards through one night.
Moonlight Whispers Moonlight Whispers
A beautiful Japanese romance that goes all wrong because he's a "hentai."
Avalon box cover Avalon
I would call this movie the thinking person's "Matrix." It takes place in a world where people play an illegal virtual reality game called "Avalon." But how much of it is real, and how much of our destiny do we control?
Of Freaks and Men box cover Of Freaks and Men
An eastern European movie about the introduction of film technology at the beginning of the last century, it's also filmed in a combination of sepia tones and black + white to invoke the style of the movies of that time. However, the content is quite mature, making it not for the feint of heart. A little, erotic gem!
Lost in Translation box cover Lost in Translation
A strong character film about two lonely people in Tokyo for a week, the acting from the leads is first rate, and the entire movie is filmed on location.
Requiem for a Dream box cover Requiem for a Dream
About the effect drug abuse has on four different people, this movie is almost as addictive as the drugs by the mesmerizing way its shot and its music.
Wirey Spindell box cover Wirey Spindell
A lot of other movies have tried to do this story with big named casts and a bigger budget. However, this little, independent film which was written, directed and stars Eric Schaeffer pulled it off. It highlights some differences between men and women and is a story of growing up in the 70's and early 80's. If you can find it, rent it.
Roger Dodger box cover Roger Dodger
Another first time independent film. Dylan Kidd wrote and directed this story of a player who tries to show his cousin how to "play the game." Can he do it and how far will he go? The dialogue of this movie reminded me a lot of Kevin Smith's brillant, first film "Clerks."
Deeply box cover Deeply
An excellent Canadian/German movie starring Kristen Dunst and Vanessa Redgrave, "Deeply" is an old fable and a modern tale. The film has good acting and was filmed completely on location in Nova Scotia. A definitely neglected gem.
Dark Blue World box cover Dark Blue World
This movie is what "Pearl Harbor" wanted to be. It has all the character and atmosphere that two hundred, million dollar epic was missing. It also probably better captures what life was like during the war, instead of a testosterone fueled adrenaline rush. I even liked the aerial battles better because, for the most part, they were filmed with real planes.
