Mr. Goodbar box cover Looking for Mr. Goodbar
This is an old film I recently rented. The acting is excellent and I'm sure back in 1976 the frank sexuality and scenes caused a stir! The ending, even today, would probably catch a few people by surprise by its perverted horror.
professional box cover The Professional
Forget the new "Star Wars" movies; if you want to see the best performance from Natalie Portman, watch this. By Luc Besson, also with Jean Reno - this movie is great. Also, in recent years, many people have tried to repeat its formula but have never equalled it.
Ghost World box cover Ghost World
An excellent, alternative teen movie. It's based off a comic series, which I haven't read, and my friend Janice says the movie doesn't follow the series very closely. But, the acting, style, and script are all still good, and there's nothing wrong with a teenaged girl getting laid by a middle-aged man.
Kissed box cover Kissed
A Canadian film that nobody has ever heard of, and starring the under-appreciated Molly Parker; it's a romance of a boy who loves a girl who loves dead bodies. It's not a comedy.
Galaxy Quest box cover Galaxy Quest
I saw this movie in the theatre and really enjoyed it, but when it came to video, I saw it a few more times. I really like it. If you're not a Star Trek fan, particularly the original series, you may not like it. I am, and I really enjoyed the jokes, humor, and mockery.
Eyes Wide Shut box cover Eyes Wide Shut
I think this movie was very under appreciated when it came out. People were disappointed because it didn't contain "better" sex scenes while, possibly, not understanding the story. Was it a dream? I don't think so, and I really enjoyed Tom Cruise's character's Dante-like decent. This movie sadly is not the masterpiece that should have consummated Stanley Kubrick's career, but Eyes Wide Shut is a well done movie and deserves more recognition.
Drop Dead Gorgeous box cover Drop Dead Gorgeous
It was a toss up between recommending this movie or Election, starring Mathrew Brodrick and Resse Witherspoon. In some ways they're similar. Election is a better movie but I perferred Drop Dead Gorgeous. It had a protagonist, Kristin Dunst, a roller skating moritcan, and Drop Dead Gorgeous had some absolutely hysterical plot twists and lines - "I know she only smoked after a really good tractor ride." The exploding swan!
Hideous Kinky box cover Hideous Kinky
The first half of this movie captures a wonderful feeling of freespiritness and innocence as the movie is told almost through the eyes of the children. It follows a young woman, played by Kate Winslet, searching for herself in northern Africa in the early 70's. It has a great western period soundtrack combined with wonderful music from Africa, and it has gorgeous scenery. I wish I had seen this movie on a screen instead of video. The second half of the movie employs a few cliched plot devices that loose the momentuem, but the whole movie is still well worth experiencing!
Network box cover Network
I know this movie came out in 1976, but I only saw it recently. I found it powerful and humorous, predicting in some ways the decades which followed it. "And we are as mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!."
Smoke Signals box coverSmoke Signals
This movie was highly praised and won a ton of awards. I still loved it! It's exceptionally well done and a refresheningly powerful, adult film.
Chinese Box box coverChinese Box
This movie is very heavy handed with its recurring themes and plot points, but I really liked it.
Female Perversions box coverFemale Perversions
Director Susan Streitfeld takes a few lessons from Peter Greenaway; this film stars Tilda Swinton and is a powerful personal journey with a mythical ending. I watched it twice through the night I rented it.
Gummo box coverGummo
An absolutely entralling and invocative film, Gummo doesn't really have a plot. It portrays and follows people in a mid-western town, but with the music and the way it is filmed - a combination of styles - the movie is enticing to watch, almost lyrical in the way it flows.
Sweet Hereafter box coverThe Sweet Hereafter
By Canadian Atom Egoyan, The Sweet Hereafter is another almost lyrical film. It follows the affects a schoolbus accident has on the residents of a small town, but the incredibly haunting muscial score and where the plot goes makes this film enticing, mesmerizing and slightly disturbing.
High Art box coverHigh Art
A great lesbian character piece with entralling performances. I liked this movie a lot better than both As Good As it Gets and Good Will Hunting, which came out the same year.
Ridicule box coverRidicule
A historical drama that is based on a true story, Ridicule tries not to depict people from the past as caricatures. Instead it touches on what the people of the times found funny and the 'science' of the time. I found this film really interesting.
