Tikal

On our first day in Guatemala we spent most of it wandering around Guatemala City, visiting the American Embassy, then looking for a travel agent who was no longer in bussiness. Over lunch, we finally decided where we wanted to go (roughly) on this trip, and we booked passage on a plane to Flores for that evening.

Flores is a quaint little town on an island in a lake. It is full of inexpensive hotels, little shops, restaurants, and internet cafes. (They were everywhere.) We stayed at a lovely placed called Villa del Lago and ate at an incredible restaurant called La Mesa de los Maya. I heartily recommend anyone visiting Flores to dine there.

On Saturday we went to the Mayan ruins at Tikal. It was incredible. We spend the entire day there from 9am - 5pm, and still didn't see it all. The best parts were after 2pm. Almost all the other tourists left and we had whole areas of the ruins to ourselves. Walking around, you could almost imagine what the place was like during Mayan times.
